About Parallel and Syntactocentric Formalisms: What the Encoding of Convergent Grammar into Abstract Categorial Grammar

چکیده
Recent thought on grammatical architectures have underlined some discriminating features of the syntax-semantics interface: their syntactocentric nature when syntactic structures are mapped or transduced to semantics (and phonology); or their parallel nature, when semantics (and phonology) communicates with syntax via a nondirectional (or relational) interface. This duality arises for instance in dealing with in situ operators. The aim of this paper is to show how the essential content of one such parallel framework, convergent grammar (CVG), can be encoded within abstract categorial grammar (ACG), a generic framework which has mainly been used, until now, to encode syntactocentric architectures. Using such a generic framework allows us to relate the mathematical treatment of parallelism in CVG with the one of syntactocentrism in mainstream categorial grammar (CG).

About Parallel and Syntactocentric Formalisms: A Perspective from the Encoding of Convergent Grammar into Abstract Categorial Grammar
Recent discussions of grammatical architectures have distinguished two competing approaches to the syntax-semantics interface: syntactocentrism, wherein syntactic structures are mapped or transduced to semantics (and phonology), vs. parallelism, wherein semantics (and phonology) communicates with syntax via a nondirectional (or relational) interface. This contrast arises for instance in dealing...
متن کاملOn the Syntax-Semantics Interface: From Convergent Grammar to Abstract Categorial Grammar
Cooper’s storage technique for scoping in situ operators has been employed in theoretical and computational grammars of natural language (NL) for over thirty years, but has been widely viewed as ad hoc and unprincipled. Recent work by Pollard within the framework of convergent grammar (CVG) took a step in the direction of clarifying the logical status of Cooper storage by encoding its rules wit...
متن کاملHyperintensional Semantics in A Higher-Order Logic with Definable Subtypes
Higher order grammar (HOG) is a linguistic formalism that aims to combine the advantages of existing constraint-based formalisms (such as HPSG) and proof-theoretic ones (such as categorial grammar) by using higher-order logic (HOL) as the description language; the underlying intuitionistic type system plays a role analogous to that of a categorial type logic, while the classical higher-order te...
متن کاملCombinatory Categorial Grammars: Generative Power and Relationship to Linear Context-Free Rewriting Systems
Recent results have established that there is a family of languages that is exactly the class of languages generated by three independently developed grammar formalisms: Tree Adjoining Grammm~, Head Grammars, and Linear Indexed Grammars. In this paper we show that Combinatory Categorial Grammars also generates the same class of languages. We discuss the slruclm'al descriptions produced by Combi...
متن کاملIncremental Interpretation of Categorial Grammar
The paper describes a parser for Categorial Grammar which provides fully word by word incremental interpretation. The parser does not require fragments of sentences to form constituents, and thereby avoids problems of spurious ambiguity. The paper includes a brief discussion of the relationship between basic Categorial Grammar and other formalisms such as HPSG, Dependency Grammar and the Lambek...
